This is a link to an already designed WebQuest on how to deal with Shakespeare and his rather difficult writing in school. It is called: "Rewriting Romeo and Juliet" http://chalk.richmond.edu/education/projects/webquests/shakespeare/t-index.htm 2. Application or purpose For many students Shakespeare is very hard to read and to understand. Because of the Old English style, students are having a hard time to complete the reading assignments since they simply don't understand what is written. Consequently, they often mark Shakespeare as BORING. But this must not necessarily be the case: By deeply analyzing a specific scene of one of his plays and rewriting it into some kind of "modern language", students might gain a better access to the plays of the famous English author. The WebQuest is designed for students in order to rewrite one scene of Romeo and Juliet and then to actually perform it on stage. 3. The basics of using the tool As in this case the WebQuest is already designed, one just has to chose what to use from it. The WebQuest is originally designed for high school students in the US. However, I think that one can use it here as well, probably for the "Oberstufe" and especially for a "Leistungskurs". The WebQuest provides an individual page for the teacher and one for students respectively. It is very clearly explained what to do as the teacher. The students basically have to design a comprehensive "theatrical portfolio" in which they collect all the different aspects they have to prepare in order to finally perform a scene out of Romeo and Juliet. Different tasks on the page navigate the students through the various steps. Therefore, it is really quite self-explanatoty what to do. 4. My ideas for classroom use In order to organize a task as presented, WebQuests in general are very suitable to do so. If one ones to create a WebQuest oneself the following link leads to a very useful web page to do so: http://webquest.org/index.php However, in this case the basis is already designed. Nevertheless, one might want to apply minor changes so that the task of rewriting a scene from Romeo and Juliet better fits into the context of a German Gymnasium. If I ever have to teach Shakespeare in one my future classes, I will definitely try to do some similar project to the one presented. If the WebQuest is very well organized, it shouldn't take too much time of the actual classes as the students also have to continuously work on it outside of class. One reason why think this is very good task is also that it meets the various needs of the students according to their skills. Thus, one student might be very good at understanding the Old English style and then rewriting in more modern language while another one is better at performing the actual scene. If the students complement each other, we will hopefully have very good results in the end. In my web blog I just answered the question I had prepared for our school trip.

Examples: PowerPoint, Movie-Maker, creating web pages, etc. Do you like this variety?
The teacher seems to really like the variety of media that is available. She tries to take part in some further training sessions about certain computer programs and how to use those properly. This way she can get to know new media and then decide if she can use them in her classes or not. 2. Do you think your school is sufficiently equipped to use the so-called "new media" with the students? So do you have enough computers, projectors, cameras, etc.? The teacher answered this question with a definite "YES". The school has one big computer room and a laptop set for one whole class. In addition, they have big flat screens in certain class rooms that can be connected with a laptop and then be used to show, for example, a movie, a presentation, or pictures. The teacher also mentioned that more computer rooms would probably not even be used by most of the teachers. This is why it was not necessary to buy more equipment. 3. How often do you make use of the internet in your classes? In general, she uses the computer room, and therefore the internet, about two or three times per month per class. Obviously, it highly depends on the topic she is working on with the class and what the age of the students is. However, she also pointed out that this usage just applied to her own language classes. Other teachers, mostly of computer sciences or mathematics, might make use of the computers much more often than she does herself. 4. Do you have the feeling that all of your students, or at least most of them, actually want to get familiar with new media and how to use the internet in the school environment? The teacher definitely thinks that her students like to work with new media, especially with computers and the internet. According to her, the students are highly motivated and like to research about certain topics in the internet. She said that sometimes this is a nice alternative than to research in books. However, there were also students who have no clue on how to work with a computer so that for those it might be hard to keep up with the others. 5. Do you have a favorite tool that you found in the internet and that you try to use regularly? Whenever the teacher works with the students in the internet, she always suggests to them to have the online dictionary "leo.org" opened. This way the students can easily look up any words they do not know at the moment. She also likes to create web quests and she has the impression that the students like it very much to work on those.
